The first shot is the little round table in my den. Love that lamp! It’s an old mason jar, and I filled it with pine cones. The candles are “vintage” hand me downs from when I was little.

The giant jar below sits on a bridge between the tops of two bookcases. I put something different in it every year. I was going for lights. They flickered out and went in the trash. The glittery star garland looks just fine!

And my prized Nativity. I collected the pieces for several years. The little wooden Church came from a craft fair and reminds me of the church my Grandmother used to take us to. I still need to unearth the little stand I sit the Angel on, and the star that I hang from the upper shelf.

… alot like Christmas!

The outdoor decorating is done, and I know you’ll forgive the poor night shot. When we moved into this house, I put hooks up along the perimeter of the porch. Makes getting the lights up super easy – the only thinking I have to do is which lights, and to garland or not to garland.

We went with the multi-colored retro bulbs this year. And garland. I have one post done, but the rest of the garland must be in another box. I’ll find it tomorrow. And, maybe some ribbon for bows. I added a twist this time by (literally) throwing some twinkly lights across the vinca. The wreath is up, but not very clear, I may move it to the porch wall. Or not.

I pulled a box from the attic that hasn’t seen the light of day since 1997 according to the pack of Christmas cards that was tucked into it. Figured that was a good first step in sorting through the keepers and the goners. What fun! Really!

I found construction paper decorations from Kindergarten and 1st grade. Gave us all a chuckle. Now I will have to figure out what to do with them – I still can’t bring myself to get rid of them.

I tossed a number of things, put a few up around the house, and packed a whole shopping bag full of stuff to pass along to Mary Alice – mostly things I used to decorate the boys’ rooms when they were little. The nephews should like that. They’ll be here for the weekend. Packed in the box were three Christmas towels. They are now in the laundry. I’ll set them out for bath time, and the kids can take them home.

Since I’ll only be keeping a few things from that box, I broke it down and tossed it. The keepers should easily fit into other Holiday totes, and I’ll gain alittle more floor space. Could this be the year that I get the Christmas decorations sorted, cleared, and organized? Maybe!

Other progress – I copied all of the 2007 pics from my SD card to cd and freed up space for the Holiday pics. Then, I copied up a whole set of short video clips from last summer to a dvd with the elf dances I did of Mary Alice, my brother, and the kids. More stuff to send with them.

You know, I have to confess. For me, the Holiday meals are probably the easiest and least stressful of any meal I prepare. It’s probably a multitude of things, not the least of it being that I rarely vary the menu, I’ve been doing it forever, and I practically have it down to a science.

It’s a bird or a ham. The type of bird varies, we’ve done capons, turkeys, duck, and cornish hens. I find the bigger turkey and ham to be the easiest on me – get up early, 30 minutes prep to get it in the oven, and spend the rest of my time with the family. We are going with a 15-pounder this year.

Another budget meal – this one for the crockpot! Again, it makes 6-8 good sized portions, and can be easily halved or doubled. Average cost, less than $11 – slash that with sales and coupons. (Note that canned broths are on sale BIG TIME this time of year – hint, hint.)

I have never had much luck with chicken in the crockpot. Unless you watch it like a hawk, it tends to go all mushy on me – and watching it seems to defeat the purpose of using a slow cooker. I use precooked chicken strips, and dump them in 20 minutes before serving.

It’s a good way to use up leftover chicken, “on sale” chicken you’ve precooked and frozen, or you can pick up those precooked strips in the meat aisle.

Prewarning – this is NOT an “official” Tex-Mex chili, Bec can go read something else. :-P

Another budget-conscious comfort food! Like most of my recipes, it’s hardy. This one makes 6-8 man-sized portions, and costs an average of $11 a pot. That works out to $1.38 to $1.80 per serving. Again, that can easily be slashed by 40% if you are watching sales and using coupons for the canned goods.

Lain asked me for some recipes that let me feed my family on an average of $45-$65 week, not including bread, milk, and produce. here’s the first in a series ;-)

This is not just a great comfort food recipe, but it is quick, easy, and economical. I love to make it from leftover chicken, a day or two after we’ve had an oven roaster – just pull the skin off, pop the carcass in a soup pot, cover with water, bring to a boil, then simmer until it begins to fall off the bone. Pick the bones out, and the base is ready to go!

Don’t have any leftover chicken? Boil a bird the same way (it will take 90 minutes or so)!

Without further ado ….

No! Not Christmas, although that’s coming soon enough.

Apples are in season!

We have been on a real bent to economize meals here, as well as adopting a healthier lifestyle. Buying in season is an important part of that. Living in “apple country,” they are cheap, cheap, cheap at the moment, so I have a nice variety of them around.

Using them in recipes is always tricky. How many apples in a pound? Or a cup, chopped?

Well, my friend, Sherry, has the answer! Pop over and print out her post, Apple Equivalents, and pop it in your Household Notebook!

While you’re there, leave her a note and tell her I sent you ;-)

Indeed, we have seen history made, once again, in our lifetime.

I tend to keep pretty quiet about my political views. For the most part, it is that they are my private thoughts, and an ingrained desire to stay out of heated, emotional debate. I grew up with politics, the daughter of a political activist, election judge, fund raiser-extraordinare, and state party official. I have seen more than my share of the inside of the great political machine.

Two things strike me as remarkable, and it has nothing to do with the history the media pundits are finally feel free to report. And, no. I’ve misspoken. I do find it remarkable, and feel a great sense of satisfaction in, the fact that we have elected our first African-American President, and that race was not a formal campaign issue.
